People have worn wigs since time immemorial. According to encyclopedia.com, the first people to wear wigs were the early Egyptians back in 3200 b.c.e. Back then, wigs were worn as a status symbol by upper-class Egyptian men and women. Instead of wearing headdresses, the nobility would wear wigs or wigs with elaborate headdresses for special occasions.
Because it was a status symbol, the Egyptians even had laws that prohibited servants and slaves from wearing wigs. In Roman times, wigs were worn by women more as a fashion accessory and blond wigs were in fashion then.
With the fall of the Roman Empire, the use of wigs stopped until men and women started wearing them again in the 16th century for the same reasons many of us wear wigs today. The fashion conscious men back then were wearing blond, black or brown wigs on their shaved heads, which were shaved to accommodate the uncomfortable and hot wigs. Unlike the natural looking wigs we have today, these wigs were long, curly, artificial looking and covered in powder and perfume. By the 19th century, wigs became unpopular with men because they preferred keeping their hair short by then. Women, on the other hand, continued wearing wigs.
Why do people wear wigs?
In past, people wore wigs to conceal hair loss to improve outward appearances and to control head lice brought on by unhygienic conditions;so they shaved off natural hair and replaced it with wigs. Today, people wear wigs for many reasons: to cover thinning hair or baldness; to change their looks; to protect their natural hair from damage caused by the elements; to be fashionable; or simply for the fun of it. Wigs are more affordable today than they were in the 1980s, so more people are using them as fashion accessories.
What types of wigs are available?
There are synthetic wigs, human hair wigs, lace front wigs and top pieces. Synthetic wigs are more affordable and easier to maintain than human hair wigs; retain their original shape from wet to dry; must be treated with specific products to maintain its quality and longevity; and can be damaged by excessive heat.
Human hair wigs look the most natural and are hard to detect; can be curled with hot rollers, straightened with a flat iron or treated with chemicals (e.g. colouring). Lace front wigs are the preferred choice of celebrities and people in the public eye because: they are a non-surgical form of hair replacement that look like our natural hair; they can be worn for weeks at a time without having to remove them; they can be combed straight back or parted in the middle; they can be worn while swimming; the hairline is constructed of lace material, thus giving it a natural appearance which is undetectable when placed on the skin. Top pieces are: ideal for concealing thinning hair in the crown area or for adding volume to existing hair; consist of a silk hair system that is the most invisible hairline attachment available.
How to choose the most suitable wig?
Before settling on a wig to purchase, it is important to determine the hair type you want, the appropriate cap design; determine your face shape; determine your wig size; choose the hair length; choose the hair colour; and be knowledgeable about the maintenance and after care required for that particular hair type.
